Closing a chapter and opening another in Sport Canterbury’s Annual Report

Sport Canterbury’s 2025 Annual Report marks the end of an important chapter in our journey as a Regional Sports Trust (RST).

Chief Executive Julyan Falloon says the report, which was approved at Tuesday’s Annual General Meeting, looks back on the organisation’s farewell to our Hornby home after 14 years - a period during which the RST encountered various challenges.

“After being displaced from QEII following the 2011 Ōtautahi Christchurch earthquake and relocating to Hornby following a short stint at the Elmwood Bowling Club, we’ve navigated the impacts of the Christchurch terror attack, COVID-19 pandemic, multiple changes in Government and the ongoing delays to the opening of Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre.

“Despite these challenges, our kaimahi and the wider sport and recreation sector have consistently demonstrated exceptional resilience and professionalism. Additionally, our Board has shown an unwavering commitment and has been instrumental in seeing this project through.

“As we look to the future, we acknowledge and appreciate our Hornby tenants who have been with us on this journey and have moved forward with us to Parakiore, and the new organisations joining us reflect a growing momentum and shared commitment to our vision.”

In addition to preparing for the Parakiore move, Sport Canterbury reached key milestones across multiple initiatives and activations during the past financial year.

“We’ve continued to co-lead the Accessible Sport and Physical Activity Waitaha Advisory Group; the Active As initiative has contributed to a notable shift in physical activity levels among rangatahi; we rebranded and launched the ‘Keep it Positive’ sideline campaign with plans to expand this further; and Healthy Active Learning continues to make a strong impact across the region,” Falloon says.

“Our Annual Report for 2024/25 not only celebrates our achievements but looks ahead to an exciting new beginning and future for our organisation at Parakiore.”
