Active Recreation

We work for, and with, the people and places of our whānau, neighbourhoods and communities; to strengthen our communities and to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi; to create supported and empowered people and places.

We do this by leading and advocating for and with; empowering and enabling; supporting and partnering.

About Active Recreation

Active Recreation is about moving in ways that bring enjoyment, connection and wellbeing into everyday life. It focuses on participation and the positive impact movement can have on people, communities and wellbeing.

At Sport Canterbury, we focus on creating accessible and inclusive opportunities for rangatahi (12–24 years) across Waitaha Canterbury and Te Tai Poutini West Coast. Through funding, resources and partnerships, we help remove barriers so more young people can be active, connected and confident.

To guide this mahi, Sport Canterbury uses Mana Taiohi - a strengths-based framework grounded in Te Ao Māori that recognises and enhances the mana of young people. Informed by rangatahi, youth development practice and positive youth development principles, Mana Taiohi shapes how we engage with young people by focusing on their strengths, aspirations, relationships and potential, creating opportunities for them to thrive.

Active Recreation Domains

From walking, swimming and cycling to skating, yoga, fishing and other forms of movement, active recreation creates opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to be active in ways that work for them.
