Mid Canterbury is embracing the ‘Keep It Positive’ initiative following its successful rollout down south.
The campaign originated in South Canterbury earlier this year, sparked by a shared concern among several sports codes about poor sideline behaviour. The attitude of parents, caregivers, coaches and players on the sidelines and during the game can significantly impact young people’s enjoyment of sport.

“In Mid Canterbury, sport is about more than just competition - it’s about building connections, encouraging growth and strengthening culture,” says Alice Breading, Sport Canterbury’s Community Advisor for Mid Canterbury.
“Whether you're a player, coach, supporter or volunteer, how we behave on the sidelines makes a difference. That’s why we’re proud to launch ‘Keep it Positive’ in our region, continuing the strong momentum started by South Canterbury.”
Signage and visuals are now being displayed at sporting venues throughout the region, supported by a strong online presence to reinforce the campaign’s message. The codes currently involved include Mid Canterbury Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Football, Netball, Rugby and Tennis.
“Our goal is to share responsibility, support our volunteers and officials, and create better experiences for our tamariki and rangatahi. Positive sideline behaviour uplifts us all, helping us feel respected, valued and more motivated to stay involved in sport at any level,” Breading says.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more united sporting community - one where every voice on the sideline contributes to a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.
“By standing side-by-side across all codes, we’re shaping better game days, and fostering stronger connections and a sense of pride in the way we support each other on and off the field.”
