The Niu Pasifika Night Market recently concluded its vibrant run, making a lasting impact on the community.
Held from October 4 to December 20 and resuming from February 21 to March 14 at Christchurch’s Te Aratai College, the market successfully addressed a significant need within the Pasifika community: a space where they could express their authentic selves, says Chris John, Healthy Families Ōtautahi Pasifika Systems Innovator.
"The Niu Pasifika Night Market created a lively space where people could connect and enjoy traditional and modern Pasifika cuisine, arts and crafts in a warm environment.
“Our goal was to support local businesses and allow the community to experience the rich diversity of Pasifika culture in Ōtautahi.”
The market's success was due to collaborative efforts involving several key partners, including the Niu Economic and Enterprise Development (NEED) Trust, Te Aratai College’s principal, Pasifika liaison teacher and year 13 students.
HFŌ backboned the market, supporting the partners and collaborating with them to get the pilot off the ground.
"The market allowed the year 13 students to develop and grow their leadership skills, gaining confidence within their community and learning entrepreneurship through service, and giving back through service,” John says.
This initiative altered resource flows by reinvesting support and funding directly in local Pasifika businesses and the community, strengthening relationships and connections through collaboration, and empowering the Pasifika community to be self-determining and take on leadership roles.
John says discussions have started and a formal evaluation is underway to gather feedback and insights.
