The Dirt & Soul Project Empowering Young Women

 Tū Manawa

WORD (World Off-road Riding Department) is actively developing programmes to empower and boost the confidence of young women in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The Dirt & Soul Project - which receives Tū Manawa funding support - involves programmes that are designed to remove the barriers to mountain biking, making it more accessible, welcoming, and inclusive.

From co-designing mountain biking sessions to tree planting, these female-led programmes play a pivotal role in creating teamwork and collaboration, which ultimately enhance a sense of belonging.

Sophie Vabulis, Sport Canterbury’s Tū Manawa Lead, is delighted with the positive impact that the funding has had empowering young women through the WORD programmes.

“This group is just one of many that the funding has supported, creating inclusive opportunities that aim to boost the physical health, confidence, relationships, and overall well-being of young women in our city”.

Katie Adams, the Programme Manager at WORD Christchurch, is thrilled with the remarkable growth and support that the Dirt & Soul Project has experienced thus far.

“Funding has enabled the sport to be more accessible through reduced fees, equipment provision, and improved transportation”.

By reducing or eliminating participation fees, the project has removed a financial barrier for many families, allowing a wider group of girls to join.

WORD is a dynamic youth mountain bike charity founded in 2013, that offers after-school programmes, holiday camps, and events for 7-17 year-olds.
