Healthy Families Ōtautahi (HFŌ) partnered with Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa late last year to host a wānanga on Amora’a Ofa’i - the ancient Polynesian practice of stone lifting.
The event brought together local community groups and kaupapa Māori physical activity providers for an immersive experience.
"Participants learnt about the sport’s origins, the cultural significance of the stones and the foundations of the practice," says Lawrence Tau, HFŌ Lead Systems Innovator.
"Following the kōrero, a live demonstration showcased the techniques and requirements before attendees tested their strength with stones ranging from 40kg to nearly 100kg."
The wānanga aimed to spark interest in introducing Amora’a Ofa’i as a unique physical activity opportunity in Ōtautahi, blending cultural heritage with community wellbeing.
