Sport Canterbury’s Mid Canterbury team have been awarded prestigious Advance Ashburton Leader’s scholarships in recognition of their dedication to the community.
Alice Breading (Community Advisor) and Anna Holland (Healthy Active Learning Facilitator) say the scholarship’s significance is “amazing” and “an absolute honour”.
“We love the mahi we do and the Mid Canterbury community we work within, so receiving a scholarship from an organisation such as Advance Ashburton that is all about our region and works towards constantly enhancing our community, is a real privilege.”
The Advance Ashburton Leader’s Scholarship aims to enhance the leadership skills of an outstanding Mid Cantabrian. The scholarship will significantly bolster Breading and Holland’s leadership efforts within the Regional Sports Trust.

“This leader’s scholarship will have [a] great impact on both our mahi within our region through testing our resilience, providing us with skills and learnings to implement into our everyday mahi and our ability to best serve our community,” they explain.
“Within our roles, we represent our communities and region and through this learning experience, we see this enhancing our confidence and capability.”
One specific project the scholarship will facilitate is the completion of the Outward Bound Women in Leadership professional development course.
Breading says this will give them invaluable skills and insights for Mid Canterbury.
“It pushes participants outside their comfort zones for optimal learning and personal growth, all while embarking on a challenging nature-based adventure,” Breading says of the course. “And anyone who knows me knows I love challenges, adore nature and am always up for an adventure.”
“I do believe that true leadership is built from the inside out and throughout the activities on this course - sailing, a solo experience, scaling rock faces and jumping off jetties, the focus will be on building resilience, developing self-awareness and creating a supportive peer network,” Holland adds. “I aim to increase awareness of who I am, what I value and how I can extend my impact within my organisation - Sport Canterbury.”
