Ashburton College recently hosted its third 'Active As' event at Argyle Park - where students enjoyed a day filled with fun, physical activities and vibrant colours.

The event featured a vibrant colour run where students engaged in various activities while being showered with coloured powder.

Year 9 Ako teacher Sarah Rawlings highlights the importance of getting students active and having fun.

Rawlings notes the positive impact of Active As - a project between regional agencies and Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa - on student engagement.

Throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, 50 secondary schools and wharekura - including Ashburton College - are receiving support to design and implement their physical activity initiatives until December 2026.

“It’s been so important this year just to get different kids getting out there trying different things – something a bit different as well,” Rawlings says of Active As.

Students also share their excitement about the initiative.

“The cool part about Active As is that everyone comes along and has a great time,” one says.

“It’s quite good because you get everyone in together,” another adds.

The colour run’s success reflects Ashburton College’s commitment to promoting physical activity and community engagement.

“It’s awesome to see the school starting to come outside the school walls and engage in local park and recreation spaces,” says Grace Ward, Sport Canterbury Rangatahi Lead.

As the colour run ends, the smiles and laughter of the participants are a testament to its success.

“I have seen lots of kids who normally would not participate in house sports and things like that get out there and give it a go,” Rawlings concludes.

Sport Canterbury looks forward to continuing this relationship with Ashburton College through Active As and encouraging more students to get active and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.
