Inspiration from the Crowd

 Women in Sport

Women’s sport in Canterbury has awesome supporters – and 13-year-old Piper Wilson is one of the most inspiring we know.

Piper loves doing crafts and playing in her school band. In her spare time, she referees touch rugby and plays hooker for the Under-12s mixed team at Christchurch Football Club.

Piper has played rugby in Christchurch since she was “five or six” – and there’s no stopping her now.

“I want to play in the women’s team one day,” says Piper, who names Kendra Cocksedge and Grace Brooker amongst her favourite athletes.

Canterbury Women’s Farah Palmer Cup assistant coach Whitney Power is Piper’s Year 8 teacher at St Francis of Assisi Catholic School - and a huge influence on her confidence and ability to embrace sporting opportunities.

“This year and last year I’ve been watching every game. I think it’s awesome that the girls have the Farah Palmer Cup because they have their own competition.”

She has encouraging words for the weekend ahead.

“Go and support and cheer them on because they’re Canterbury girls trying their best for Canterbury.”
