Supporting Sports to Play it Safe

In Level 2 across the region, from West Coast Rugby League to Waimate Netball, “sport safe packs,” administered by Sport Canterbury, have helped clubs continue to deliver quality experiences even as levels changed – so the game could go on.

According to Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon, Sport New Zealand’s Community Resilience Fund made the new resources possible.

Over the past two months, Sport Canterbury has administered 22,500 hygiene packs to 11 different regional sports organisations across the Canterbury West Coast region in support of hygiene and sanitisation practices that are critical in the Covid environment.

“These packs have allowed sports to maintain best practice and peace of mind so the game can go on,” says Sport Canterbury Chief Executive, Julyan Falloon. "Our environment will continue to change and fluctuate, so our ability to adapt and be prepared as a community is critical."

The packs were supplied by Hygiene Direct, and include hand sanitiser gel as well as a hard surface sanitiser. Both products consist of naturally sourced ingredients that are 100% manufactured in New Zealand.

“As an organisation, we are grateful to support Sport Canterbury to provide these resources to sporting clubs and organisations,” says Hygiene Direct Manager, Laura Love.

Megan McLay confirms that Christchuch Netball Centre allocated 80 sport-safe packs to her clubs. "We are lucky enough that Sport Canterbury has been able to offer this, and we are lucky to be able to pass it on to our stakeholders."

Bard Tacon, West Coast Rugby League Chairman, adds: “The West Coast Rugby League community are very appreciative of the support of Sport Canterbury’s West Coast Regional Office, who have been able to supply us with ‘sport safe’ (hygiene/sanitisation) packs. These packs have helped grass roots Rugby League on the Coast continue to give all players, management, parents and supporters the confidence that the welfare of everyone is top priority.”

Grant Lewis, General Manager at Canterbury Golf also reflects a sense of gratitude. “The hygiene products provided have certainly been well received by our clubs and have been flying out the door. The products have been most useful at regular touch points in our golf clubs – office reception, Pro Shop counter, and regular cleaning of the clubhouse areas. The product has also enabled staff to regularly make sure their hands are sanitised. Thank you.”
