Canterbury Kids Up for a Challenge

Primary school children missing their dose of friendly competition now have an exciting opportunity to take part in a series of four challenges, designed to keep them moving.

Starting on Monday May 25th, Primary Sports Canterbury invites Year 5 to 8 students from across the Canterbury West Coast region to take part – and entry is free of charge.

“We wanted to provide Canterbury children with the option to get involved with a unique event while our regular events are on hold,” says Primary Sports Canterbury Sport Director, Lyn Miles.

“The hope is that the senior school team or sports leaders will set up and run these activities for themselves and the younger children to assist the teachers,” she adds.

There are four challenges over four weeks, starting on 25 May and running until 19 June. These must be performed at school and include: ‘Hotsteppers Hip Hop/ Dance,’ ‘Speedy Wheelers Scooter,’ ‘Spectacular Skateboard’ and ‘Sensational Skipping/or a Circuit Challenge.’

Each Challenge asks the children to practice a specific skill related to the given category and film it when they think they have it mastered.

‘Hotsteppers,’ for example, encourages children to form a group of two to four and come up with a dance routine that is integrated with the music as well as incorporating at least three formation changes, while ‘Speedy Wheelers Scooter’ and ‘Spectacular Skateboard’ ask children to time their speed over 300m and 200m distances, or measure how far they can glide without pushing or showcase their best trick.

‘Sensational Skipping’ asks children to time themselves and count how many reps they can do of various jump styles. There is also a ‘Circuit Challenge’ for those schools that don’t have access to skipping ropes, which encourages participants to time how long it takes them to complete all four stations.

Schools may enter up to five teams/individuals per gender, per year group for rolls under 400, and up to eight teams/individuals per gender, per year group for rolls over 400, as the challenge entry for their school. Children can enter all four challenges if they wish.

There will be certificates awarded for the first three placing in each year level and gender. The overall winner will be awarded with a free Top Team Challenge session, the overall second place winner will be awarded with a surprise visit from an athlete to take a sports session at their school, and the overall third place winner will receive a gift from Anderson & Hill Sports Power.
