You Got Game? An At-home Competition for Christchurch Kids

Christchurch kids have a unique opportunity to apply problem-solving skills, principles of teamwork and cooperation – even in isolation.

Sport Canterbury's Top Team Challenge engages over 18,000 Cantabrians of all ages every year. Each Challenge consists of a series of fun, interactive games that participants take on in a team format. The Challenge was originally conceived in post-quake Christchurch as a creative way to keep people of all ages active and inspired, and has never been more relevant as it is for communities impacted by Covid-19.

According to Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon, “The Top Team Challenge benefits our tamariki, teachers, schools and whanau who are inspired by the chance to have fun and try new activities together. It’s about keeping active, and equally about emotional health and wellbeing.”

In 2020, the Sport Canterbury team has turned things around by creating the opportunity for communities to get creative in asking: ‘You Got Game?’

The idea behind the ‘You Got Game’ initiative is for individuals or groups of primary school-aged children to come up with a brand-new game to incorporate into the mobile challenge starting in Term 3 2020.

Entrants can choose between designing a water activity, for fun in the sun on a hot summer’s day, or a dry activity that will get participants thinking, communicating and problem-solving  as a team.

The winning contestants will have their game built by the Sport Canterbury team for use across the region during the 2020/21 Top Team Challenge season. The winner will also have the opportunity to name their game and win a free Top Team Challenge for their school.

“We encourage everyone to get involved with this exciting opportunity, especially those in the community who have taken part in the Top Team Challenge before.

“It’s about reflecting on that experience and thinking, ‘how awesome would it be if one of the games could come from me?’"
