It’s fun, it’s social, it’s about getting active and having a go – a new initiative has been developed for Canterbury youth.
Young people across New Zealand are more likely to leave sport after the age of 13 – and local codes are teaming up to change these statistics.
In February 2020, Netball Mainland, Touch Canterbury and Canterbury Cricket are partnering up to deliver a fun event based around interactive multisport events as the first in a four-part series in 2020.
“We believe that being active can make a world of difference to our young people’s physical and mental health,” says Simon Hill of Canterbury Cricket.
The objective is to get youth involved in social play, in any sport or recreational activity they wish to try. This is primarily a social opportunity for young people to explore play, in a non-competitive and fun environment with their peers. It is about highlighting the benefits to health and wellbeing from involvement in physical activity
On 19 February 2020, at Elmwood Club, young people between 13 and 18 are invited to the first of these sessions. The event will incorporate touch, cricket and netball, adding a faster pace and element of fun, in a relaxed, encouraging environment. There will also be music, with a BBQ and water provided for participants.
“We hope they’ll come away feeling inspired to continue being active and pick up new skills that may translate into other games or sports they try in the future,” says Grant Robertson of Touch Canterbury.
