Adjusting to a new home has just become a bit easier for Christchurch’s refugee and migrant community, as women can now access a weekly class designed to be “culturally sensitive, inclusive and inspiring.”
According to Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon, the wider population benefits from access to sport and physical activity – reaping vast benefits for physical as well as mental health.
Many women who arrive from refugee and migrant backgrounds, however, may find their opportunities limited, when the programmes are not designed with diversity in mind. Sport Canterbury initially approached the Christchurch City Council to discuss options and possibilities to create a space where women can feel supported in an inclusive environment.
Sport Canterbury’s team of Physical Health Advisors, including Jessica Fairbrass and Jessica Allan, has worked closely with Christchurch Resettlement Services’ (CRS) Jo Fasheun, to study the challenges new settlers face in Christchurch. And they remain convinced of the difference that “being active” can make to one’s adjustment and wellbeing.
“Women who may be highly motivated but are simply not comfortable in a traditional gym environment, are encouraged to come along to the Phillipstown Community Hub and have a go,” says Allan. “Viviana Zanetti from the Hub has been very supportive of the work we have been doing and has donated the room for koha.”
Every Friday at 10am, a qualified instructor from FitClub at the Hub will lead a Zumba-style workout, which benefits cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility.
“We are very fortunate to have the team from FitClub at the Hub involved, as they are known for their energy and enthusiasm. They also take time to understand their participants and can adapt the routine to meet specific needs and confidence levels.
“For many women, including those who are brand new to physical activity, these Friday morning classes are a perfect place to start.”
