Aoraki No Limits Athletics 2026: Championing inclusion on the track

Over the past two years, Sport Canterbury and Aoraki secondary schools have remained committed to creating inclusive physical activity opportunities for students with diverse learning characteristics, including those with special needs or disabilities.

As part of this ongoing work, Sport Canterbury partnered with Chris Moffitt, Regional Sports Coordinator for Special Olympics New Zealand, to explore new ways of involving these students in regional sporting events.

Following the success of the No Limits Fun Day held at the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton in November, Sport Canterbury extended an invitation to students from Supported Learning Centres across Aoraki to take part in the 2026 Aoraki Athletics Championships. This included dedicated No Limits events to complement the Para‑Athlete categories, ensuring every student could participate in a meaningful and inclusive experience.

The No Limits events gave students the chance to proudly wear their school colours and participate in an Aoraki day alongside peers competing in the formal athletics programme. Events were carefully adapted to accommodate a wide range of abilities, offering vortex throw, mini javelin, softball throw, shot put, standing long jump and a grand finale 60m walk/run on the track.

A total of 35 students from eight schools took part, contributing to a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere. Feedback from staff, students, learning assistants and Special Olympics New Zealand was overwhelmingly positive.

Many students said running on the track was a standout highlight. Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) highlighted the well‑structured programme and the supportive, encouraging environment that helped each student participate in ways that met their individual needs.

Moffitt was pleased to see students challenging themselves on the track, noting the partnership with Sport Canterbury helped overcome financial barriers that can arise for small participant groups.

"This was an outstanding day that showcased what is possible when schools, sports codes and community providers work together to create truly inclusive events with opportunities for everyone," he says. "We look forward to growing the partnership."

Sport Canterbury was also delighted to receive heartfelt feedback from Ashburton College: "Our guys came back exhausted but buzzing yesterday! They had a great time.

"The LSAs were blown away by how well-organised it was and especially about how the people running events got all the kids going and having a blast. Another special occasion for our guys."
