Both policies were compiled by Sport Canterbury’s Women & Girls Group.

“By Sport Canterbury management entrusting staff with the development process, we ensured policies were shaped by those directly affected,” says Women & Girls Group member Maria Smolar. “Enabling staff to take the lead not only saved management time but also made staff feel involved and valued, empowering them to drive meaningful change.”

The Menstruation and Menopause Policy aims to create an environment where staff can communicate openly and be provided the right support to flourish and perform at their best.

Flexibility in working hours and adjustments to workstation setups are just a few of the practical measures we offer to support our staff.

Sport Canterbury Women & Girls lead Megan Harlick says introducing these policies is a significant step to creating a more equitable and supportive environment for all employees.

“On International Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women in our workplace. Our policies are invaluable in creating a positive space where wāhine can thrive.

“These policies are a testament to our ongoing efforts to promote equity and wellbeing in the workplace."

Sport Canterbury’s recently introduced enhanced Parental Leave Policy aims to foster an inclusive culture that aligns with our values of family/respect and commitment to our people (manaakitanga).

The policy enables staff to give time to be or to support the primary carer of a new child, and to confidently discuss family scenarios and circumstances with their manager and peers. It also provides a one-off top-up of the primary carer parental leave payment, while partner leave is paid for five days.

“Our policies reflect Sport Canterbury’s commitment to supporting staff through significant life events,” Harlick says.
