“I’m from New Brighton and we always go down to the finish line and celebrate all the winners coming across the finish line,” says Sutherland, who’s worked at Sport Canterbury for over a decade. “[I’ve] just always wanted to do it,” he says of the Coast to Coast.

Sutherland has been part of Sport Canterbury's support crew for several years, which deepened his passion for the Coast to Coast.

"I love the atmosphere and the supportive nature of the event," he shares. "I put my hat in the ring and was lucky to be selected at Sport Canterbury."

Sutherland’s training started slowly but he has since ramped up his time on the water. He lives near the Avon River and practices there regularly but acknowledges the need to train more on the Waimakariri River to prepare for the Coast to Coast.

“Now I’m on the Waimak every week,” he explains.

Sutherland says Sport Canterbury’s commitment to inclusivity and encouraging an active lifestyle aligns with his Coast to Coast involvement.

“[It] gets more people, more active, more often and I’m proof anyone can do it.”

Sutherland’s main goal for the race is simple: "Overall, my goal is not to fall out,” he says. “I'm nervous about that.

“Hopefully, I'll stay in the boat the whole time and cross the finish line nice and dry."

Sutherland’s journey to the Coast to Coast is a testament to his dedication and passion for physical activity. He hopes to inspire others to take on new challenges and stay active.
