Bridging the Gap to Empower ‘Beginning Teachers’ in Physical Education

The Healthy Active Learning (HAL) team recently held the first 'Beginning Teachers' Hui, a workshop aimed at bridging the gap and offering a professional development opportunity that focuses on delivering high-quality physical education in their schools.

A recent survey conducted revealed that, beginning teachers - individuals in their first two years of teaching practice - are grappling with understanding how to conduct impactful PE lessons, due to a lack of confidence and capability.

Our team focused the day on several key areas; Giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, co-designing with students, and effectively implementing the curriculum with inclusive practices.

HAL Facilitator, Shayla Foster, expressed “that this workshop is only the beginning of the team’s support and collaboration amongst the teachers.”

“We’re looking to facilitate the creation of a network among the beginning teachers here.”

“Going forward, we want the network to serve as a support system, allowing educators to collaborate, share experiences, and learn from each other's challenges and successes.”

Conitinuing to develop our initiatives alongside the Ministry of Education, Megan Martin, Curriculum Lead, shared some thoughtful insights during the event, covering Curriculum 101 and presenting her extensive experience in teaching and physical education.

Moving forward, HAL is committed to assisting beginning teachers in applying their learnings practically.

While still in the draft stage, the team is looking to hold termly workshops, offering continuous support and a platform for educators to advance their professional development journey in delivering effective physical education in schools.
