Today’s announcement of a legal dispute and further delays over escalating Parakiore completion costs, will only compound the frustration for Ōtautahi Christchurch residents, Sport Canterbury and the wider sport, active recreation physical activity sector.
“At this rate we will see the Crusaders running out on Te Kaha, before the Tactix or Rams play on Parakiore’s show court,” stated a frustrated Sport Canterbury Chief Executive, Julyan Falloon.
The project’s Main Works contractor CPB, has increased its claim by an additional $212m to $439m to complete Parakiore. The claim is being rejected by the Crown’s delivery agency, Rau Paenga (formerly Ōtākaro Ltd), on the grounds of both, entitlement and amount, but have indicated they are seeking a reasonable commercial resolution.
According to Mr Falloon the sport, active recreation and physical activity sector are all relying on this essential community facility, with some sports in our region unable to grow until this facility is open.
Additionally, Mr Falloon believes it’s the once-in-a-generation Ōtautahi Christchurch athlete that’s potentially missing out, “it’s the next Sophie Pascoe who doesn’t have access to a 50m pool to train in.”
The major anchor project is about 70% complete, and though years behind schedule, the best-case scenario is for CPB and Rau Peanga resolve this quickly, minimising any further delays.
Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre will be the largest facility of its type in Aotearoa once opened, with a current opening date of mid-2025.
