On behalf of Sport Canterbury and our valued sponsors, we thank you for your support of the 2022 Sport and Recreation Awards - held online during the month of May.
Historically, the Canterbury Sports Awards have celebrated Sport in the Canterbury region through the form of a black-tie event, held annually. Celebrating sportspeople, teams and wider high-level success has been the format up until the introduction of Covid-19 into the community.
With events now under restriction, we have been given the opportunity to relook at the way we celebrate and define success in not only Sport, but Active Recreation.
2022 will see the awards move from a physical event to a digital format, with award categories evolving to reflect the mahi Sport Canterbury undertake and promote within the community, as well as acknowledging, in a more rounded form, high level success.
Recognising the evolution of the events space and acknowledging the restrictions upon the planning and hosting of events, the 2022 awards will become a visual recorded series. We are proud to start moving our awards toward the future, rather than be late adopters to a changing sporting landscape. Highlighting the winners of each category; a feature will be given to show the real mahi of the people behind the awards.
We have recognised that the landscape of RST run sport awards have been changing around the country, to reflect the work RST’s undertake within the community and the balanced approach and participation drive from Sport NZ.
To place ourselves ahead of the curve, we have reviewed our past award categories and have evolved these to start the journey towards a more holistic approach that acknowledges those in our community doing great work, in numerous different forms.
Certain award categories have been amended to acknowledge multiple winners. This has been done to not only streamline the awards, but to show that commitment and achievement can be made at all levels of sport and that achievement is not one-size-fits-all.
