Our Regional Approach to Sport and Recreation Facilities
Across the Canterbury West Coast region, people of all ages receive countless benefits from sport and physical activity. They rely, however, on having the right spaces and places to keep active in their own communities.
In late 2016, Sport Canterbury began the process of leading the development of a comprehensive Sports Facility Plan for the South Canterbury Region.
The South Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan is now complete; this marks the first time a truly Regional Sports Facilities Plan has been written for the South Canterbury region. This plan will form part of a wider Canterbury and West Coast approach to sports facility provision.
Sport Canterbury brought the Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie District Councils together along with the Community Trust of Mid & South Canterbury, Trust Aoraki and a Community Representative, to form a Steering Group for the project.
Sport Canterbury wishes to thank our project partners as well as Sport New Zealand for their support of the plan, and Global Leisure Group as our project consultants.
