Kids Run with a Twist on Tradition

Cross country day for Queenspark Year 3/4 students became one to remember this year, as parents, caregivers and siblings were encouraged to team up and take part.

The standard cross country events started just after lunch on Wednesday 9 May, as in previous years. However, once the age groups had completed their respective distances, families teamed up to take part in a fun run event.

"The course was set out with fun obstacles’ that meant the children could challenge themselves the way they see fit, these obstacle’s were nothing fancy but use equipment that most schools would have in their gear sheds. It was really cool seeing children, parents and siblings working together to do the course" said Sport Canterbury's Community Sport Advisor Zara Taylor.

Teachers organising the event offered several opportunities for children throughout the day to challenge themselves and enjoy a sense of achievement.

"Students who may not always be the fastest were given added motivation to try and succeed," Taylor adds. "Families who enjoy being spectators were even more enthusiastic, looking forward to the part of the day where they could join the action."

The fun run course obstacles were designed to promote teamwork and critical thinking. The successful model may be considered by other schools across Christchurch, looking to add a sense of excitement and inclusion to traditional cross country days.
