Shaping the Future of South Canterbury

Local sport and active recreation groups, and the wider community are being urged to help shape the future of sport and active recreation facilities across South Canterbury as part of a new regional project.

Sport Canterbury and the Mackenzie, Timaru and Waimate District Councils are working together with Trust Aoraki and the Mid-South Canterbury Community Trust to develop the ‘South Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan.'

South Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan

The plan will identify and prioritise sport and recreation facility needs, and is the first time it has been undertaken across the region. The plan will be an open document for Councils, Funders and others to use to inform and guide the region’s investment into future sport and active recreation spaces.

The project partners have engaged GLG (Global Leisure Group), leading sport and recreation facility planning consultants, to assist with the plans’ development.

Project Steering Group member and Spokesperson Julian Blanchard, said that the partners are looking to develop a plan to guide development and investment priorities over the next 20 years, as well as adopting a ‘One Region’ approach to facilities.

“The Local sport and active recreation community will have ample opportunity to provide input into the plan and are encouraged to do so.”

The first opportunity will be via an online survey that will be e-mailed out in February.

“The plan will balance vision with pragmatism, aiming to enable projects to get off the ground.”

“It’s essential that all local sport and active recreation groups contact Sport South Canterbury by Monday the 23rd of January to ensure we have their correct contact details, so they get the opportunity to take part in this project.”

Casual and informal sport and active recreation users and the wider community are also encouraged to input into the plan, and will be able to do so through a similar web and paper-based survey that will available at Libraries, Council Offices and major sport and recreation facilities.

“There will also be further opportunity for community input as the Plan develops over the next ten months or so, however all interested sport and active recreation groups and facility providers are encouraged to provide input from the outset to ensure their needs are appropriately and adequately considered to achieve the best possible result for the region,” said Mr. Blanchard.

Sport and Active Recreation groups are to contact Sport South Canterbury to update their contact details via:
