Remembrance Event Returns
Thursday, 9 November, 2017
Sport Canterbury has confirmed that the Mitre 10 MEGA – A Run to Remember will return to the Port Hills in 2018, on Saturday 24 February.
"People of all ages across our region look forward to this event each year," says Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon. "Each February, we appreciate the chance to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in the 2011 earthquake.
"Many of our participants comment on the sense of community this event provides. We walk along Summit Road and down Rapaki Track, alongside people who have been affected by the quakes in many different ways.
"What we share in common is a sense of hope for the future of this region. And once again in 2018, we thank New Zealand Red Cross for joining us as our event charity partner of choice."
New Zealand Red Cross is among the first to respond whenever disaster strikes, and this was true after both the Canterbury earthquakes and the November 2016 earthquake.
“We are proud to be part of both the Canterbury community and the Mitre 10 MEGA - A Run to Remember,” says Alice Montague, General Manager for Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at New Zealand Red Cross. “Not only does it help to support our work, but it also helps encourage a sense of collective wellbeing that is so important when it comes to building strong communities.”
Given the value of this event to Cantabrians as an opportunity to reflect and remember, Sport Canterbury purchased the community event in 2016, to secure its future.
Sport Canterbury invites participants in the Mitre 10 MEGA – A Run to Remember each year to share candid feedback on their experience – to have a voice in how the event is delivered in the future.
“We have a number of positive changes to introduce in 2018,” says Falloon. “This event truly belongs to the community – and we see that in the feedback, that participants feel a sense of ownership, which is key to successful events.”
Improvements to the Mitre 10 MEGA – A Run to Remember in 2018 will include:
The 10km course remains the same as earlier events, however two aid stations will be available, alongside the water stations – and toilets! – halfway along the course.
Mitre 10 MEGA has sponsored the event since 2013.
“Nicole and the team at Mitre 10 MEGA have been outstanding and loyal supporters, helping to establish this event as a fixture on the Canterbury calendar. It continues to be an important opportunity for reflection, for communities that will always remember the events of February 2011.”
