Sport Canterbury's Green Prescription team can meet with you in person at one of our clinic locations around Christchurch. During this Face to Face consultation, your Green Prescription support person will discuss with you your current activity levels, your goals, any barriers affecting your ability to increase your activity, nutritional advice, and provide guidance around activity options so together you can work out an activity plan suited to your individual needs.
If you are unable to meet one of the Sport Canterbury Green Prescription team for a Face to Face consultation, your support person will offer you a phone consultation instead. They will organise a time to call that suits you and discuss with you your current activity levels, your goals, any barriers affecting your ability to increase your activity, nutritional advice, and provide guidance around activity options so together you can work out an activity plan suited to your individual needs.
Sport Canterbury's Green Prescription Be Active programmes are eight week programmes where participants get the opportunity to try out a number of different activities for a low cost and in a supportive environment. Each week is a different activity, which is run by community instructors or the Green Prescription staff, and range from aqua jogging, to tai chi, to zumba.
The activity sessions last approximately 45 to 50 minutes, with 20 minutes of eduaction (for example, motivation, nutrition) and finishing up with some social time over a cup of tea or coffee. All activities are at an entry level pace and generally low impact. The Be Active programmes run in conjunction with the school terms and are available both daytime and evening, at different locations around Canterbury.
See our Be Active page for current Be Active programmes.
Ongoing Support (Reviews)
After you have had a Face to Face or Phone consultation, your Sport Canterbury Green Prescription person will stay in touch with you via phone, email or text message to help keep you motivated and track your progress with your activity plan. During these reviews, your support person will discuss with you aspects such as any benefits noticed, your current activity level, and what the next step in your plan should be.
Sport Canterbury's Green Prescription also offers Have a Go sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for you to try out an activity you may not have tried before or perhaps are unsure about trying on your own (for example, aqua jogging). A Green Prescription team member will meet you at the Have a Go location, introduce you to the instructor, or demonstrate how to participate in the particular activity. The activities chosen for Have a Go sessions are ongoing activities within your community, so you can continue to attend the particular activity after you have tried it in a Have a Go session.

Sport Canterbury's Green Prescription programme also supports ongoing activity with our Meet & Move groups. The Meet & Move groups are run by graduates of the Be Active programmes who have enjoyed a particular activity they tried during the Be Active programme and wished to continue with it on a regular basis once their Be Active programme finished. There are a number of different groups, ranging from walking and aqua jogging, to a circuit class. Your Green Prescription support person will discuss these with you during consultations or reviews.
