Geoff Barry (Chief Executive)

Geoff’s professional background is in teaching with over 22 years working at Aranui, Burnside and Christchurch BHS. For the last 9 years he has been Chief Executive of Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

A history of involvement in aquatic sports and playing experience at senior level rugby and rugby league in Christchurch. He coached the NZ Surf Life Saving Team to world championships success in 1998. He is still active in triathlon and cycling. (Loves the lycra)

Geoff is committed to growing participation in sport and physical activity in the trust region but understands that the trust cannot be ‘all things to everyone’. A focus on making a difference through partnership and alignment will require the trust to make choices on engagement and services offered.

Julyan Falloon (General Manager Operations)

Julyan Falloon (General Manager Operations)

Julyan comes from a physical education teaching background and has also completed post graduate qualifications in sport management. Julyan's key role is one of regional management along with new project development and implementation. He's competed to an elite level in soccer and now enjoys all forms of physical activity.

Jonny Kirkpatrick (Business Manager)

Jonny Kirkpatrick (Business Manager)

Jonny has a BComm double major in Marketing and Management from the University of Otago and Post Graduate Diploma in Event Management and is a Jack of All Trades and master of none on the sports field. In February 2009 he completed the Coast to Coast as a Two Day Individual and now spends his weekend chasing a little white ball around the golf courses of Canterbury!

Lucy Ryan (Events Coordinator)

Lucy Ryan (Events Coordinator)

Lucy joined the Sport Canterbury team in 2012 fresh out of tertiary education, where she completed a BCOM in Strategic Management and Marketing and a Graduate Diploma in Event Management.

Lucy is a very keen sportswoman who plays a number of sports including Rugby Union, Rugby Sevens, Touch Rugby and Tag Football.  Lucy is very excited to start in her newly established role as Events Coordinator in an industry she feels so passionately about.

Steph Hill (Finance Manager)

Steph Hill (Finance Manager)

Steph joined the Trust in October 2007 as the Finance Officer. She has had a wide range of experience managing finances for a number of companies and other charitable organisations. Steph has a keen interest in sport, particularly rugby and cricket and enjoys walking, biking and attending the gym to keep fit.

Rob Ecclestone (Sport Development Manager)

Rob Ecclestone (Sport Development Manager)

Rob is a Lincoln University graduate, completing a Bachelor of Park Recreation and Tourism Management in 1995, majoring in Sport Management.

Since May 1996, Rob has worked as part of the Sport Development team at Sport Canterbury, building up a wealth of knowledge as to how the sports industry works, the issues facing sports organisations and different solutions for dealing with these issues.

A keen hockey player, he has recently swapped the hockey stick for a golf club, and now has green keepers worried about the state of their golf courses.

Lorraine McLeod (Sport Development Advisor)

Lorraine McLeod (Sport Development Advisor)

Lorraine has been involved with many sports but in recent years netball has claimed a majority of her time. She has been a player, coach, manager and an administrator so has strong ties with grass roots sport as well as at the elite level. In the last couple of years Lorraine has taken up rowing and competes at masters regattas.

Tony Harvey (Sport Development Advisor)

Tony Harvey (Sport Development Advisor)

Tony has been employed by the Trust since its inception (1989). Tony works predominately in Primary and Intermediate schools, liaising closely with the community in providing a sport development service utilising regional sports organisations and clubs.

Tony is passionate about the delivery of quality physical activity to children and works closely with teachers and coaches to achieve this.

Tony has been involved with numerous sports as a player, coach, with soccer and cricket being his main sports. He has a Diploma in Recreation and Sport and is a Coach Educator for Football NZ. Before joining the Trust he worked in a series of government jobs as an administrator/consultant.

Pat Barwick (Coaching Advisor)

Pat Barwick (Coaching Advisor)

Pat brings with her a wealth of experience in coaching and administration. She has coached various hockey teams, at various levels, including the NZ women's team at the Barcelona Olympics. And also represented NZ as a player for ten years (including 9 years as captain).

So with that experience, you can see she is well qualified for the role.

Vaughan Utteridge (EQ Recovery Manager)

Vaughan Utteridge (EQ Recovery Manager)

Vaughan has over 20 years experience in sport administration at club and regional level and has had key roles in a number of international and local sporting events. Starting in March 2011 as a direct response to the earthquakes, his role as Sport Recovery Manager is to assist regional sport in dealing with the challenges in delivering sport in the short and long term and to assist with local events to ensure there are activity options for the community.

Mel Mather (EQ Recovery Assistant)

Mel Mather (EQ Recovery Assistant)

Mel has been with Sport Canterbury since 2005. She took a year off last year to work with the Christchurch City Council in the Sport Services Team but has since returned to work in the Sport Recovery Team following the February earthquake.

Competitive sport has been a huge part of Mel's life. She has been a Coach, Manager and competitor of surf life saving at club, regional and national level. Over the winter months Mel keeps fit by playing netball.

Aaron Webb (Young Persons Manager)

Aaron Webb (Young Persons Manager)

Aaron has come from an outdoor education management background, specialising in working with “at risk” teenagers. He has a bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management from Lincoln University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Sport Management. In his time outside of work Aaron volunteers as a rugby coach, and is right into mountain bike racing.
Aaron has a passion for young people and believes that sport plays a key role in their development. Through his role at Sport Canterbury he wants to see more young people with skills enjoying participation in sport and recreation.

Sally Small (Fundamental Skills Advisor)

Sally joined Sport Canterbury in 2010 after 5 years teaching in the UK. She has first hand experience in the delivery of the UK fundamentals programmes and brings a wide range of knowledge and skills to this position. She is passionate about ensuring all young people have the opportunity to access high quality physical education and sport opportunities.
In her spare time she plays volleyball and netball and enjoys skiing.

Jon Derry (Young Persons Advisor)

Jon Derry (Young Persons Advisor)

Jon joined the team following his move from the UK, where he worked for a Local Authority Sports Development Team. After the completion of his studies in Sport and Health Science Studies Jon taught Outdoor Education for four years before working in Exercise Referral and on to the promotion and development of Sport and Physical Activity in schools and the community.

Jon tries to be active at every opportunity, he enjoys playing hockey and cricket and enjoys every opportunity to utilise New Zealand's unique outdoor environment.

Rebecca has come to Sport Canterbury from a primary aged teaching background. She is passionate about young people of all ages having many opportunities to try and engage in a variety of sports.

Tammy Mehrtens (Young Persons Advisor - Earthquake Recovery)

Tammy comes to Sport Canterbury after graduating from Lincoln University completing a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management. She has spent time in the U.K. working in Outdoor Education and is passionate about providing opportunities for young people to engage in physical activity.

Tammy enjoys playing netball and tennis and loves getting out into New Zealand's amazing outdoor environment for activities like water and snow skiing.

Sophie Phillips (Physical Activity Manager)

Sophie joined the Trust in 2010. She has a Physical Education degree from the University of Otago and a post grad Diploma in Secondary School teaching of both physical education and health.

Sophie enjoys participating in a variety of physical activities and runs the odd half marathon for fun! She is passionate about helping others to increase their levels of physical activity for the benefit of their health and enjoyment of everyday life.

Jess Wood (Green Prescription Advisor)

Jess graduated from Otago University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Physical Education majoring in Sport Science and Exercise Prescription. She has been with the trust since April 2011 and is enjoying helping a variety of people and supporting them to make physical activity a part of their lives!

When not at work Jess enjoys anything in the outdoors including snowboarding and giving water sports a go! She runs to keep fit and is looking to do her first full marathon this year.

Anna Wong (Green Prescription)

Anna joined the Trust in 2009. Anna has a Physical Education degree majoring in Exercise Prescription and Management. she comes to the Trust after working in the fitness industry. Anna has a passion for helping people and promoting health.

Jenny Rose (Green Prescription)

Jenny joined the trust at the end of 2011 after completing a Bachelor of Physical Education majoring in exercise prescription and sport and leisure studies, as well as a Bachelor of Science majoring in psychology.

Jenny thoroughly enjoys her work within the green prescription team, encouraging others to become more active and improve their health and quality of life.  She loves participating in all sport, in particular touch and netball, and keeps fit by running and attending the gym.

Amanda Grigg (Green Prescription)

Amanda joined the Green Prescription Team in 2009. A nurse by trade, her activity related training developed from rehabilitation work and an interest in general fitness. Working part time for the Green Prescription Programme and managing a young family of three, Amanda understand the challenges of incorporating regular physical activity into daily life. She believes activity should be a fun, rewarding part of life and she enjoys helping people discover how easy this can be.

Justin Muschamp (Sport Opportunity Advisor)

Justin Muschamp (Sport Opportunity Advisor)

Justin is the Sport Opportunity Advisor for the Canterbury West Coast Sports Trust which is a joint intiative with the Halberg Trust. He completed a Bachelor of Parks Recreation and Tourism Management at Lincoln University in 1993. Since completing his degree he has worked in the sports sector for and with people with disabilities, with his major focus in the last five years being on inclusion.

Justin has Cerabral Palsy and was a member of the New Zealand Wheelchair Rugby Team (Wheelblacks) for the 1998 World Championships and 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games. Justin aims to ensure that all people with disabilities have the opportunity to be involved in sport and physical activity in their community.

Trudy Baker (Administration Assistant)

Trudy has been working for the Trust since August 2006. She has an administration background and a passion for sport. Trudy has competed for 11 years on the Marching field, the highlight being the current New Zealand Champion Team for Pioneers of Canterbury Masters Marching Team. Trudy enjoys supporting her children in their physical activity and sporting endeavours.
