Fundamental Skills Programme
INTRODUCTION
In 2009 the CWCST completed extensive community consultation to identify priorities for the KiwiSport Regional Partnership Fund investment. The community consultation identified a number of priorities which included the improvement of fundamental movement skills of children.
Fundamental movement skills have been defined by SPARC as “the building blocks for many physical activities including play, games, te ao kori, outdoor and physical recreation. They are the precursor movement patterns to many of the more specialised and complex skills used in sports”.
Mastery of fundamental movement skills at an early age is vital so that children are able to acquire more complex sport specific skills at a later stage of development and participate confidently in organised sport and physical activity. Research also shows that children with well developed fundamental movement skills have enhanced cognitive functioning, memory, concentration, behaviour and academic achievement.
National and Regional Sporting Organisations have been supported to deliver programmes across the CWCST region to complement the Fundamentals framework below.
