Active Youth Programme

The ultimate aim of this initiative is to increase youth participation in physical activity and sport, inline with the SPARC guidelines for young people.

To achieve this the programme will have a youth development focus. Youth will be the focal point with a number of resources, facilities, programmes and people that contribute to their development and growth with sport and physical activity. To achieve this outcome the programme will empower youth to be responsible for planning, organising, decision making and initiating programmes and activities. This approach will begin to break down the traditional barriers that adult designed and operated programmes present for youth.

The programme will investigate ways to make existing operations more effective and in touch with youth, by offering professional development for staff and volunteers, as well as creating links to organisations that can provide them with other expertise. Linking organisations is vital to the success of this programme, this will allow more agencies and organisations to provide the services our youth want to participate in, and ultimately this will increase participation.

Advocacy for youth and issues that surround them is a crucial function of the programme. There are many opportunities to assist youth obtain improved sport and physical activity programmes and facilities through advocacy. This will often involve working within large organisations such as local authorities, national sporting organisations, health boards and within the education sector on behalf of the best interests of youth.

The bottom line is; we want more youth more active more often, to develop themselves as well rounded positive contributors to our society.
