Teacher Training

The aim of teacher training is to upskill teachers so that they are able to provide physical activity programmes, modified sport and KiwiSport opportunities to the children they teach. This training is not only aimed at school teachers, but also student teachers, parents, high school students and school coaches.

Preparation is the key to a good teaching / coaching session.
  • Find out what is available before starting your planning.
  • Remember to keep your lesson simple.
  • Determine what you want the children to achieve in your lesson
  • Select one or two simple drills / activities and develop your own variations
  • Remember to allow for different skill levels and learning outcomes
  • Establish your routines: for getting equipment out and putting away, forming groups, getting everyone to stop and listen.
Teacher training is about enabling people to facilitate, coordinate, and deliver physical activity and KiwiSport in a fun and positive way.

Sport Canterbury’s teacher training programme is free. If you wish to attend any of the In-service teacher training opportunities not being held at your school, please email tony with your name, contact phone number, date of training, venue and sport or physical activity.
